The Sony Ericsson W300i
The Sony Ericsson W300i is a budget walkman phone that is worth even more than its price. Barring a few design flaws, it delivers well on all other fronts.
Design and Looks
The W300i is a flip hone and flip hones is what Sony Ericsson does best, surprisingly they got it all wrong this time around: the flip mechanism is known to produce some creaks when being flipped open or close and users may experience other flex issues when performing this operation.
That and the awful keypad are probably the only major design flaws on this phone: the keypad is nearly flat and the buttons consist of overlapping circles, the surface of the keypad is slippery and definitely a no-no for testers. The phone is also made out of flimsy parts, that aside we'll get to what is good about the phone.
The phone performs exceedingly well as a music player, as always Sony provides this phone with Mega Bass support and a great set of earphones to go with it. You can also connect earphones with 3.5mm jacks into the audio-out port.
Apart from the music player, other multimedia features include Photo DJ, Video DJ, Music DJ, and Music Match. Needless to say the Photo DJ, Video DJ and Music DJ help you edit photos, videos and also help you compose your own polyphonic ringbones on the phone.
Coming to the camera, the 1.3MP resolution is a bit of a disappointment, but, being a low end dedicated walkman phone, it would be absurd to expect more. Luckily, what the camera lacks in, the camera application aboard the phone more than makes up for; this application lets you select a variety of color and viewing modes that greatly enhance your shooting experience.
Though exclusively marketed as a walkman phone, the W300i has some excellent business features too such as Bluetooth support for speakerphone, an organizer, a newsreader for RSS feeds and PC syncing for contacts and calendar appointments.
The good news does not simply end with the phone, the support CD that comes with the packaging is bundled with some great software including Quick Time, Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition and a multimedia message composer.
The phone has virtually everything that a phone can incorporate, and for this price, what more could you ask for. Here's a dedicated walkman phone that can do so much more.
